The Lancaster County Youth Amateur Hockey League board of directors is pleased to announce that it has formed a new partnership with the Susquehanna Rapids Girls Hockey Program for the development of girls’ ice hockey throughout the Lancaster County area and surrounding regions.  The LCYAHL, parent club of the Lancaster Firebirds, will support the Rapids as the main girls hockey program in the area; will open ice time to the Rapids for off-season skills sessions, practices, and the popular Pony Tail tournaments and for some in-season weekend games and practices; will help the Rapids establish an all-girls clinic for new players at the Lancaster Ice Rink; will hang a Susquehanna Rapids banner; and will encourage girls to play with the Rapids when they seek a girls' program.  The Rapids hope to stage a Let's Play Hockey recruitment event at Lancaster to encourage more local girls to start playing in the program.

This now makes four clubs to endorse and support the Rapids, which include Baltimore Youth Hockey (Maryland), Howard County Youth Hockey Club (Maryland), and York Ice Hockey Club (Pennsylvania).

The mission of the Susquehanna program is as follows:

1. Support girls with a stable, sustaining program.
2. Develop players and build stronger, well-coached teams for all girls at their appropriate age and skill levels.
3. Have competitive Tier I girls’ teams and send them to USA Hockey national tournaments.
4. Have competitive Tier II girls’ teams and send them to USA Hockey's new Tier II national tournaments.
5. Introduce the sport to new players on a regular basis.
6. Support advanced players in their quest to play prep or college hockey.
7. Support all players so that they have a lifelong love of the sport.

The Rapids have six teams this season, representing about 100 girls and 20 coaches from three states.  The Rapids directors work hard to set up a season plan that is considerate of the distance families must travel to support their girls in ice hockey.  They offer a well-organized season calendar and the opportunity for girls to play in sound and strong Tier I and Tier II teams at the appropriate age and skill level.

The Rapids program can only be enhanced by the addition of LCYAHL players and coaches and the support of the Lancaster Firebirds. The Susquehanna Rapids organization is very grateful for Lancaster's support and look forward to growing the great sport of hockey among girls from Lancaster County.
